SISTERS OF ST. BASIL THE GREAT CONTINUE “CHRIST OUR PASCHA” SERIES
The second in a continuing series on the Catechism of the Ukrainian Greek
Catholic Church, “Christ Our Pascha”, sponsored by the Sisters of the Order
of St. Basil the Great, was held Saturday, October 19, 2013, at the Basilian
Spirituality Center, Fox Chase Manor, PA.
The presenter for the conference was Dr. Robert Marko, Professor and Chair of
Theology at Aquinas College, Grand Rapids, MI, who holds a Doctoral Degree
in Moral Theology from Duquesne University. A visiting professor in Eastern
Christian Ethics at the Metropolitan Andrey Sheptytsky Institute of St.
Paul University in Canada and a Fulbright Scholar in Social Ethics at
the Ukrainian Catholic University in Lviv, Ukraine, Dr. Marko is a passionate
advocate for a deeper appreciation of the Eastern Catholic Churches.
Reviewing the fact that the Catechism consists of three sections—The Faith of
the Church; The Prayer of the Church; The Life of the Church--, the workshop
centered on the third part-the spiritual and moral dimensions of the
Church, with Dr. Marko speaking on the topic, “Partakers of the Divine
Nature: Life in Christ and the Church”.
The morning session focused on how the theological emphases in the East complement
the Western understanding of moral growth and transformation, ancestral
sin and the eight passions or sins as found in Evagrius of Pontus.
The afternoon session considered how certain social issues such as the relationship
of Church and State, the meaning of democracy, Christian citizenship,
and the reality of social sin receive a distinct emphasis when considered
in a particular cultural and historical context.
Lively discussions took place throughout the workshop and at its conclusion the
participants described the experience as “enlightening”, “illuminating”,
“educational as well as humorous”.
Sr. Ann Laszok, OSBM, coordinator of the event, thanked all for their participation
in a workshop she found personally enriching, while Sr. Dorothy Ann Busowski,
OSBM, Provincial Superior of the Sisters of St. Basil, thanked Dr. Marko
for his willingness to take part in the series as a presenter and for
making “a complicated subject understandable to all.” Sr. Dorothy Ann
also thanked those who attended from near and far, Sr. Ann for publicizing
the series and Sr. Marina Bochnewich. OSBM, the Director of the Basilian
Spirituality Center.
